NEW THIS YEAR, A CLINIC OF THE SAME TIME LIMIT WILL FOLLOW EACH GROUP’S PERFORMANCE AND IS INCLUDED IN CLASS FEE.
CHORAL RULES
1. In class choirs at least 75% of the class must participate.
2. School choirs may be competitive or non-competitive. Please mark on Entry
Form.
3. Classes 3113 to 3115 can be sung either in harmony or unison, and music may be
transposed to suit the range of the choir.
4. All classes perform 2 or 3 selections that contrast in style and mood.
5. One (1) ORIGINAL copy of the music selections MUST be received by the
Festival Registrar by February 6th in order to mail to the adjudicator for perusal.
6. Title and composer of each selection must be announced clearly by the conductor
before each piece is performed.
7. ADJUDICATION: see Band Division, page 36, Rule #3.

VOCAL RULES
AT FRONT OF SYLLABUS
ENTRY
A WORKSHOP/MASTER CLASS IS TO FOLLOW THE COMPETITION/PERFORMANCE
VOCAL RULES
1. Competitors must only enter one Vocal Section, i.e. Junior Vocal can not enter
Intermediate Vocal; Intermediate Vocal can not enter Senior Vocal. Exception
is Ensemble Classes.
2. The

3. The appropriateness of all selections chosen by competitors will influence the
Adjudicator's marks.
4. All music must be memorized or marks will be deducted. Oratorio Solos may
use music score.
5. Accompaniment for all classes MUST NOT be mechanical, exception to this
will be in Contemporary Pop, see Class Description.
6. In Junior Vocal no individual is allowed more than one (1) entry in Classes
3200 to 3206, but entrant must compete in two (2) or more Classes from 3200
to 3219 to be eligible for the Junior Trophy.
7. In Junior Vocal one test piece per class is required; operatic arias are
considered inappropriate.
8. In Junior and Intermediate Vocal Only the chosen selection may be
transposed to the suitability of the performer.
9. In Junior and Intermediate Vocal Only concert song arrangements of
Canadian Folk Songs will be accepted in Canadian Composition Classes.
10. In Intermediate Vocal no individual is allowed more than one (1) entry in
Classes 3300 to 3303, but entrant must compete in two (2) or more Classes
from 3300 to 3317 to be eligible for the Intermediate Trophy.
11. In Junior & Intermediate Vocal one test piece per class is required except
in Concert Songs & Song Set - Cycle of Songs where you need three (3) pieces.
12. In Intermediate, Senior & Open Masters Vocal Art Song Duo and Lieder Duo Classes
the Entry Form must have both the name and age of the accompanist and the vocalist as they
are to be considered as a team.
13. In Senior Vocal no individual is allowed more than one (1) entry in Classes
3400 to 3401, but entrant must compete in two (2) or more Classes from 3400
to 3417 to be eligible for the Senior Trophy.
14. In Senior & Open Masters Vocal one test piece per class is required except in
Concert Songs & Song Set - Cycle of Songs where you need up to five (5) pieces.
15. In Open Masters Vocal no individual is allowed more than one (1) entry in Class
3500, but entrant must compete in two (2) or more Classes from 3500 to 3509 to be eligible for the Senior Trophy.
16. In all Divisions, only entries in Canadian Classes are eligible for the Catherine
Angela Finney Memorial Trophy.
17. In all Classes in all Divisions if you need to change costumes or clothes you will
have a time limit of 2 minutes in between selections which you are performing.
Classes will not be held up for these costume changes.
18. On all entries to Musical Comedy, Light Opera, Operatic Solos, and
Oratorio Solos please include TITLE of main Work.
19. First Year of Study Classes in both Intermediate and Open Masters Vocal are
not eligible for any trophies or bursaries.
20. Sing-offs for the FLORENCE TUNBRIDGE MEMORIAL TROPHY: The
Winners of all Classes: 3300 - 3317, 3400 - 3411, and 3414 - 3417 are eligible
to compete for this trophy ONLY if they are 15 to 25 years of age as of
December 31 prior of this Festival year. Each competitor shall choose
winning selection and
FESTIVAL which must be of Standard Concert/Recital Repertoire excluding
Contemporary Pop. Jazz, Musical Comedy/Theatre, Light Opera and Opera. The two
selections must show a contrast in mood, style and period.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS FOR VOCAL
CANADIAN COMPOSITION
Own selection other than Contemporary works.
ORATORIO SOLO
Own selection of any standard Oratorio or Sacred Cantata, if preceded by a short recitative the same may be included.
OPERATIC SOLO
Own selection from any Standard Grand Opera, not to exceed six(6) minutes in performance. English language optional.
LIEDER SOLO
Own selection from songs by a recognized composer of Lieder, to be sung in German only.
STANDARD SONG, music composed up to 1945
Own selection. Composed in the English language having in mind great examples of English Poems such as those written in the Elizabethan, Victorian, Romantic and Early 20th Century periods, i.e. Yates, Shelley, etc.
CONTEMPORARY STANDARD SONG, music composed 1945 onward
Own selection. Composed in the English language having in mind great examples of English Poems, such as those written in the Elizabethan, Victorian and Contemporary periods, i.e. Yates, Shelley, etc. and composers, i.e. Ives, Rorem, Bernstein, Bury, etc.
Duo for vocal and pianoforte. Own selection from songs by a recognized composer of Art Song, except German Lieder. May be sung in original language or English translation. Copy of the music selection and a good English Translation must be presented to the Voice Co-ordinator the day preceding the performance.
LIEDER DUO
Duo for vocal and pianoforte. Own selection from songs by a recognized composer of Lieder, to be sung in German only. Copy of the music selection and a good English Translation must be presented to the Voice Co-ordinator the day preceding the performance.
SONG SET - CYCLE OF SONGS
The songs of the group should be chosen from one single composer from the Standard Concert Repertoire.
GROUP OF CONCERT SONGS
The songs of the group should be chosen from various periods, styles and moods. No composer to be used more than once. Any Standard Accredited Conservatory Syllabus index may be used for appropriate repertoire.
In Musical Theatre & Light Opera Solos no “human props” are allowed in
Junior, Intermediate and Senior Vocal Divisions.
MUSICAL THEATRE & LIGHT OPERA SOLO JUNIOR DIVISION
Own selection from Gilbert & Sullivan to modern musicals or motion pictures that may be done with appropriate props and costumes. Keep in mind Song and Dance is available in the Dance Section of this Festival and is not to be used here.
MUSICAL THEATRE INTERMEDIATE, SENIOR & OPEN MASTERS SOLO DIVISIONS
Own selection from modern musicals or motion pictures that may be done with appropriate props and costumes. Keep in mind Song and Dance is available in the Dance Section of this Festival and is not to be used here.
ALTERNATE MUSICAL THEATRE CLASS
Is for participants wishing to add an additional Musical Theatre, especially for those interested in Provincial Qualifications. Selection should contrast Classes # 3220-3223, 3320-3321, 3420-3421, or 3512. Light Opera, Operetta and Gilbert & Sullivan not accepted in this class.
VOCAL VARIETY SOLO
Selection to be chosen from Light Opera, Operetta, Gilbert & Sullivan production, Revue or Cabaret, or works of a similar genre. No pop music is permitted; Musical Theatre selections are not permitted. Costumes, staging, dancing and sets are not permitted, however, one hand-held prop may be used if appropriate.
LIGHT OPERA INTERMEDIATE, SENIOR & OPEN MASTERS SOLO DIVISIONS
Own selection from period of Firml, Herbert, Romberg, Johann Strauss, Leahr, and Gilbert & Sullivan etc., that may be done with appropriate props and costumes, keep in mind Song and Dance is available in the Dance Section of this Festival and is not to used here.
FOLK SONG
Own choice of song of any nationality, original tongue or English Translation but not Contemporary work. "Folk Song" Classes in all divisions must not have an identifiable composer. However, arrangements by a modern composer are acceptable. If music is not available, a copy of the words must be presented to the Adjudicator.
SPIRITUAL SOLO
Own selection from the Spiritual repertoire. Arrangements by a modern composer are acceptable. If music is not available, a copy of the words must be presented to the Adjudicator.
CONTEMPORARY
Includes Contemporary Christian, Folk and popular settings of Sacred Songs. Own selection which may be self-accompanied or accompanied by mechanical means.
FIRST YEAR OF STUDY
Own selection, competitor not entered in any other class.
SMALL VOCAL ENSEMBLE UNCONDUCTED
Duets, Trios, Quartets or a group of
SMALL VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE UNCONDUCTED
