DANCE RULES
1. There will be NO DANCE-OFFS offered during this Festival. All contestants must dance at the scheduled time or be
disqualified, see General Rules for Competition and Program, Rule #9.
Please note there will be absolutely no changes to entries once program is in print process. Please do not ask.
2. All music must be recorded on CD with good sound quality. No I-Pods Allowed. A CD player and amplification will be
provided. CD’s must be cued, one dance per CD and CD to be labeled with competitor’s name, class and competition
number, as well as any special instructions such as start and end locations and tags.
3. Costumes are permitted but will not affect the marking.
4. All GROUP entries MUST be titled.
5. The time limit is the MAXIMUM amount of time allowed for the entry and includes the introduction and tag. It is not
necessary to use the full amount of time and it may be more beneficial for younger students to do a shorter dance.
Time Limit for SOLO, DUO, TRIO classes: 3 minutes
Time Limit for GROUP classes: 5 minutes
6. The Festival Chairperson requests that all entries be submitted by the teacher if possible.
7. In order to win an award or be recommended to the Provincial Competitions, a competitor must have competed in two or
more solo classes in the dance section for which they are recommended (i.e. Ballet or Stage for Junior / Intermediate /
Senior; or Modern for Intermediate / Senior only ).
8. Please list names and ages of all entrants on entry forms (use back if necessary).
9. NOVICE CATEGORY: To enter this category, students must be a FIRST TIME ENTRANT who has not had more
than 2 years of ANY form of dance. This applies to Solo/Duo/Trio and Group participants. Competitors wishing to
enter these classes are not eligible to enter the regular categories for the same classes. Please Note that all NOVICE
CATEGORIES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TROPHIES AND ARE FOR ADJUDICATION ONLY, NO
PLACEMENTS TO BE GIVEN.
10. Only one entry per category allowed. Participants cannot compete against
themselves in same category even if participating in a different number or group.
This may be done for adjudication only, non-competitive. (New for 2012)
DANCE PROCEDURES
1. Competitors must be in attendance 15 minutes prior to given time and report to
a representative of the Committee.
2. No late competitor may perform once the Class adjudication has begun.
3. No coaching competitors while they are performing except in Classes for 6
years and under.
4. No Run-arounds in any dance routine or medium. (New for 2012)
5. All protests must be made in writing to the Festival Chairperson and be
accompanied by $10.
6. Absolutely no discussion may be entered into with the Adjudicator, see
General Rules for Competition and Program, Rule #12.
ENTRY FEES:
Solo Classes $18.00 per class
Duo and Trio Classes $20.00 per class
Group Class $11.00 per student entered
Masterclass/Workshop $15.00 per student
DANCE DESCRIPTIONS
ACRO - 6900 CLASSES (NEW for 2012)
All participants must be supervised during routine. Routine must be 50% DANCE and 50% acrobatic elements. No flames, sharp pointed objects or mats. All participants should have an emergency plan in event of injury. A simple prop may be used as an integral part of the routine.
Pyramids are prohibited: Exceptions are pony sits, thigh stand and shoulder sit.
Groups: a lift/supporting dancer must maintain direct contact with the stage at all times.
TAP - 7000 CLASSES
Based on any recognized tap technique. Music MUST NOT have tap sounds.
Solo Tap classes 8 years and under
It is suggested that entrants include the following tap elements in the routine:
shuffles, cramprolls, simple turning combinations
Solo Tap classes 9 to 12 years
It is suggested that entrants include the following tap elements in the routine:
shuffles, cramprolls, simple turning combinations, timesteps, pullbacks,
maxi-fords, buffalos, grapevine combinations, shuffle graboffs, turning cramprolls
Solo Tap classes 13 to 21 years
It is suggested that entrants include the following tap elements in the routine:
shuffles, cramprolls, simple turning combinations, timesteps, pullbacks,
maxi-fords, buffalos, grapevine combinations, shuffle graboffs, turning
cramprolls, graboffs, riffs, simple wings, all wings, riff combinations, rhythm
changes, turning combinations, syncopation
STAGE - 7100 CLASSES
Dance must be suitable to the field of modern stage using any dance medium. Routine must be entertaining and diversified, i.e. NOT a straight ballet, jazz or tap number. Stage routines should have at least 75% dance content. Acrobatic, baton or disco routines are not sufficient in themselves as stage routines. Props in stage dance must be an integral part of the dance and must be easily handled by the competitor, i.e. no heavy props. Voice-over and lip synching for emphasis is permitted in this festival.
Please Note: Voice-overs are not allowed at the Provincials.
SONG & DANCE - 7200 CLASSES
Song & Dance routine must be suitable for modern stage production. Any dance medium may be used, but the routine must be choreographed to provide interest and entertainment. Must be approximately 50% song and 50% dance/acting. No vocals or taps on music tape. Lip Synching is unacceptable in this category.
Please Note: Voice-overs are not allowed at the Provincials.
JAZZ - 7300 CLASSES
Dance technique based on any recognized Jazz technique including isolation of the body utilizing contraction and release usually associated with up tempo music. Splits and Jazz floor work permitted. ONLY HAND HELD PROPS ARE ALLOWED. Adjudication will be based on suitability of the music and movements being appropriate to the age of the dancer/dancers.
STREET DANCE - 7400 CLASSES
Any combination of trends such as Hip Hop, Funk, Rap, and Breakdancing.
LYRICAL JAZZ - 7500 CLASSES
Lyrical jazz places emphasis on gentle flowing TECHNICAL JAZZ MOVEMENTS to interpret slower paced music tempo. Modern does not belong in here, please see Modern/Contemporary Ballet.
BALLET BALLET - 7600 & 7700 CLASSES
Demi Pointe/en Pointe (7600)
Dancers may perform in soft slippers or en pointe (watch class entered for solos ).
Demi-character (7700)
Classical Ballet Mime. Lower body must be that of a classical dancer. Character must be portrayed classically through mime and use of upper body. Props may be used.
INTERPRETIVE - 7900 CLASSES
Own choice of dance. Any technique may be used to portray an IDEA, MOOD, THEME. (i.e. NOT a character experiencing these feelings) Classical Ballet technique must be used. See Contemporary Dance definition. Please title the selection on entry form or take title to adjudicator prior to dancing.

MODERN/CONTEMPORARY/CONTEMPORARY BALLET - 7800 CLASSES
Modern
A stylized dance discipline with its foundation of technique based on vocabulary from, Duncan, Graham, Cunningham, Limon, Alley, Horton, etc. Dance shoes are not permitted. Vocal Music is permitted.
Contemporary
Free movement of dance encompassing various dance disciplines. It is a constantly evolving style of movement. Dance shoes are not permitted. Vocal music is permitted.
Contemporary Ballet
Classical ballet discipline combined with other dance elements and components including non-traditional physical vocabulary. Ballet shoes or pointe shoes are required. Vocal music is permitted.
DUO CLASSES
Duos must include two dancers. Class age is determined by adding the ages together and dividing by two. Both dancers should be equally involved in the routine.
TRIO CLASSES
Trios must include three dancers. Class age is determined by adding all the ages together and dividing by three. All dancers should be equally involved in the routine.
GROUP CLASSES
Groups must include four or more dancers. Class age is determined by adding all the ages together and dividing by the number in the group. Please list names and ages of all entrants on the entry form (use the back if necessary). All dancers should be equally involved in the routine. For groups ages 11 and over, extremely large floor (40’W x 40’D) will be available in our New Theatre. All younger groups please specify in special request area on entry form if larger stage is required and we will try to accommodate. Note: This floor is now available for all Dance Disciplines in 2012.
Studio or teacher names will not be used in the programme; therefore, All Group Entries Must Be Titled.
STUDIO PRODUCTION CLASSES - 7195 CLASS
Any age, any number of participants, 10 dancers or more. Any form of dance medium. Props are permissible. We regret no special lighting or special effects can be accepted. Time Limit: 15 minutes maximum
